"Dave Aitken Spring Run 2012"
REPORT
22nd April 2012
This year saw the 10th Anniversary of this event. Yes, 10 years since our friend and very enthusiastic classic car/motorcycle member passed away.
However Dave is fondly remembered every year. Once again Judi and family chose a charity, this year being Rachael House for the 5 per car entry fee to go to.
This run also coincided with the National Drive it Day.
Organised on behalf of The Scottish Vintage Austin Enthusiasts Club and Fife Historic Vehicle Club by Ian Headrick and assisted by Jim Galloway. 18 cars of all ages and capabilities joined Judi and family. Miraculously once more the weather gods were in our favour with bright, although chilly overhead conditions and dry under the wheels.
As normal everyone at the Powmill Milk Bar meeting point were all so much enjoying the social chatter (and bacon rolls) that it took a few engines to be started and a couple of horn toot toots to get the message over that we actually had a run to go on!
Ians route (led at a great pace by Jim Galloway) went through Dollar and Clackmannan, over the old Kincardime Bridge and skirting/through Airth, Dunmore and Strathallan. Keeping to scenic B roads we passed on through Bridge of Allan and up to the ever-scenic Sherriffmuir mountains, always exiting on these single-track roads. An interesting crossing of the busy duel carriageway of the A9 was followed by passing through Blackford and on to the halfway stop at the Shopping Outlet at Baxters.
The second half of the run was a shorter number of miles meandering down the glen passing close to Gleneagles Hotel and the (busy) golf complex heading for Dunfermline all the time and very quickly finishing back at the Powmill Milk Bar.
Following some more compulsory refreshments Ian announced the winners in the Dave Aitken Shield best cars: -
1st was Peter Kendricks 1930 Austin Seven Swallow.
2nd was Bob Archers 1934 Austin Ascot
3rd was Jim Galloways 1960 Rover P4.
A total of 100 was passed to Judi for her chosen charity.
I have the following report from Peter Kendrick re his new acquisition, thank you very much Peter:-
Austin Big Seven Four-Door Saloon, BRV 80
The Big Seven purchase was triggered by the diminutive size of our Austin Swallow internally (though the Swallow is NOT to be pensioned-off). When Irene and I went on overnight-stay events in it, I drove the Swallow and she came along in her Yaris, bringing our luggage small in volume though it is. Also, for further-flung destinations the extra power of "Biggie" will get us there faster: 55mph top speed as opposed to 42mph (arising from a 900cc engine as opposed to a 750cc one). This model was produced from mid-1937 to mid-1939 (in parallel with the normal Austin Seven), and though bodily very similar in appearance to the Seven Ruby, mechanically there are aspects foreshadowing the Austin Eight, which was to follow. Both four-door and two-door models of the Big Seven were available: ours being the four-door, having six lights, a sliding roof and running boards (these last two having been optional extras at the time of original purchase). The colour is black with maroon wheels and maroon interior trim. The date of first registration was March 24th, 1939.
I am the eighth owner, having bought it from a man in Essex: his advertisement on an internet site having caught my eye. He had started the restoration of a Riley, and did not need two classic cars. He had owned "Biggie" for almost four years and had done work on it: largely on the cosmetic side (respray, re-chroming of bits, etc.), though a new set of tyres and tubes had been fitted, together with a new battery. The interior had been re-trimmed in the mid 1980's: there are photos of the car with the work in process. The car came to Edinburgh on a transporter (and I'd be happy to recommend the one-man business which did the job, very competently). Since its arrival in mid-January it has had significant work done on it mechanically. The Girling brakes have been worked-through, to bring them up to scratch. Some wiring has been changed (and more will be, for better routing). A large amount of sludge has been removed from the engine, and the petrol tank and sender unit have been repaired. The petrol pump has been relocated in the engine bay (being an electrical replacement for the original mechanical pump) to reduce the chance of vapour-lock. The underside, as well as the interiors of the box-section "A" and "B" posts, has been treated with rust-inhibiting Dinitrol as a two-stage process: a "thin" liquid to pull itself into small cracks followed by a viscous grade to dry on top and give ongoing protection against road salt, stone chippings, etc.
There is a limited amount of further work that I know of, for carrying out as the spirit and pressures of other jobs moves me. Meanwhile Irene and I intend to get in some journeys in our new toy: the first car I have bought in the last thirty-five years! The 100 miles which I have driven it so far is over twice the distance it has been in the past four years for its immediate previous owner. who took it merely to nearby static events.
